Did you break a wheel bearing (yes, it happens - they don’t all just seize when they fail) or kerb it really hard?

Does that wipe off? It looks like my stock Magnum wheels (in the garage for the summer), it could be corrosion, the chrome plating literally flaking off the wheels. My wheels are pretty bad, and will only give me one or two more seasons before I have to outright get rid of them. The cost to re-finish them is significantly higher than the cost of replacing them.

Not that I am aware of and no not at all. last Thursday I have new tires placed on the rear and had them rotated. this tire is new and the wheel was in the back. I do not recall whether it looked like this before the tires were changed and the wheels rotated. I noticed after the wheels where swapped around there was a bit of movement in my wheel when i’m at high way speed, which struck me as odd since I have basically new tires at all corners and no issues I was aware of other wise. I just noticed this when I pulled into work this am.

Any vibration? If you get the wheel off the ground, does it shift on the hub?

no that white marking does not wipe off. and that center cap is far out from where it should be. I’m looking for replacement but only keep finding the damn 17 inch wheels off the STS and I have like 800 worth of new pirelli’s I’m not looking to have to rebuy..

yes, i feel a little vibration at high way speed. and during braking but that a whole nother issue, ha. and I have no way to lift it.

So were you talking about the corrosion or the center cap being bumped out? I thought it was the latter.

both! I dunno much about this area of the car.

Looks like the chrome is just starting to chip around that central piece (hub?) which isn’t chromed.

so that’s ok then? shitty looking but safe to drive on?

Take the wheel off and look at the hub. See if the CV nut has a lot of extra threading sticking out the end.

When I got new CVs put into the HEMIWagon, the new ones stick out too far and the actual cover for the center hub doesn’t fit over them.

Alternatively, you can pull the wheel off and just tape the center cap back in with a rubber mallet or even just a good smack, they’re supposed to pop out so you can put the wheel on a balancer, so having the center cap sticking out isn’t a big deal, it’s just why it’s sticking out that could be either a problem, or just nothing.

I would think so, yeah, just cosmetic.

Well, hopefully that’s fine and just a misfitting center cap. You’d probably know if the bearing was failing the way I described because it would kind of quickly get progressively worse as you drive. A little vibration doesn’t sound like a bearing issue to me.

well the other wheel that was there before the rotation didn’t stick out so maybe it’s just corrosion keeping it from going back in. I’ll pick up a mallet and see if it will go in or not.

I’d pull the wheel off just to be safe as well. If it looks free and clear, you’re fine, a little tap, and stick the wheel back on.

ok, yeah that seems to be to general idea. I’ll get it off this weekend.

I’ll take a picture of one of my winter wheels if I get home early enough tonight for comparison. It’s not the worst thing, but I would start saving up for new wheels now, because it will only continue to get worse from here.

I actually amd about half saved up for new wheels in the spring. i want this set to just be for winters. I’m (cross my fingers) hoping to have my paint fixed and my interior done this winter. so I wanna be pop’in fresh come summer.

Looks like typical gm wheel corrosion. Like the others said, take the wheel off and inspect for any damage (use a magnifying glass) all over.

At least they're not the Cadillac ones with large center covers (over hub and lugs) that get and retain water and corrode from the inside out.
